AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest open

ATLANTA -- Calling all artists: the AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is now accepting entries.

Designers have until Friday, Feb. 28 to submit their works of art. All entries will be whittled down to five finalists, which will be unveiled on ajc.com/peachtree on Saturday, Mar. 15.

No one will see the winning design until race day, when it will adorn tens of thousands of finishers' T-shirts.

"The AJC Peachtree Road Race T-shirt design contest is a great way to showcase the work of our local artists, and we are always impressed with the entries we receive," Atlanta Track Club interim executive director Sue Payne said in a statement.

Whoever wins the contest receives $1,000, while each of the four finalists gets $100.

ATLANTA -- Don't be alarmed if you see a whole bunch of people running down Georgia 400 this weekend.

The Pay the Last Toll road race will be held Sunday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 a.m., and gives athletes one last opportunity to see the infamous toll booths before they are demolished.

Runners will begin at the Glenridge Connector in Sandy Springs and run south to Phipps Plaza. When they reach the toll booths, they will throw in their final 50 cents. All proceeds will go to charity.

Northbound lanes of Ga. 400 will be closed for the race from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Georgia Department of Transportation crews will also spend part of the weekend tearing down a MARTA pedestrian bridge on southbound Ga. 400.

FAIRBURN, Ga. -- Creekside High School in Fairburn will hold a 5K run/walk this weekend to benefit its JROTC program.

The event will be Saturday, Nov. 9 at 8 a.m.

Registration is $35. Participants can pick up their packets Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., or on race day beginning at 6:30 a.m.

Parents of Fulton Leadership Academy for Girls to present Links for Leadership Golf Tournament

ATLANTA -- Parents of participants in the Fulton County Leadership Academy for Girls (YLAG) will host their first Links for Leadership Golf Tournament on Monday, Oct. 7 beginning at 10 a.m.

The tournament will be held on the Wolf Creek Golf Course, which is located at 3000 Union Road in Atlanta.

The Links for Leadership Tournament is the first of what YLAG parents hope will become an annual event.

The purpose of the Fulton County YLAG is to develop young girls into resilient women who are able to confront the many challenges facing young women and prepare them to seize opportunities as they present themselves.

Initiated by Fulton County Commissioner William “Bill” Edwards, District 7, and supported by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, YLAG is one of the initiatives of the Call to Womanhood program. The program is sponsored by the Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Children and Youth.

5K to encourage healthy lifestyles

UNION CITY, Ga. -- The South Fulton Family Fun 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, June 22 in Union City.

This event encourages Fulton County families to incorporate healthy habits into their everyday routines, including walking and running.

The race will begin at 8 a.m. at Ronald Bridges Park. Registration is $20 in advance or $25 on race day. A portion of proceeds will go toward prostate cancer research.

'People Chase' encourages people, dogs to run together

FAIRBURN, Ga. -- The Chattahoochee Hills Country International Horse Trials will include with a run for attendees and their furry friends.

The CHC International People Chase will be held Sunday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at Bouckeart Farms.

The 2.5-mile run will take runners and leashed dogs along a cross-country horse trail, featuring rolling hills, artistic jumps and picturesque views of south Fulton County.

Sheriff to roll out bicycle safety program

Sheriff to roll out bicycle safety program

UNION CITY, Ga. -- Fulton County Sheriff Ted Jackson will launch a bicycle safety program for children Friday.

The sheriff will unveil his Pedestrian/Bicycle Safety Program at Oakley Elementary School in Union City.

Sheriff Jackson's program will teach children how to stay safe while riding their bikes. Kids at Oakley Elementary will also receive helmets and reflective vests to make them safer and more visible to drivers when they ride.

A $27,900 federal grant will finance the initiative.

Jackson said he hopes to bring the curriculum to more schoolchildren throughout Fulton County.
