Fulton County seeking Youth Commission applicants

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Fulton County Office of Children and Youth wants young people interested in serving as leaders in their community.

Recruitment for the Fulton County Youth Commission is underway. Applications will be accepted from youth between 9th and 11th grades in Fulton County schools. The deadline for submission is Friday, May 23.

The Fulton County Youth Commission is a leadership program designed to mentor future leaders. Youth Commissioners address the many issues presently facing youth through the influences of government mandates, policies and legislation. Students become familiar with how local government resolves youth issues, and make suggestions for the best solutions, but most importantly, help facilitate change.

For consideration, a student must meet the following requirements:

Tri-Cities HS dominates Shuler Hensley Awards

(WXIA) -- The 2014 Georgia High School Musical Theater Awards, otherwise known as the Shuler Hensley Awards, were held Thursday night, with one Fulton County school scoring the majority of the honors.

Tri-Cities High School's production of Dreamgirls crushed the competition. It won a whopping 13 awards, including Best Musical, Best Director and all the acting prizes.

Milton High School's Legally Blonde won two awards, while Pebblebrook High School's Les Misérables and Wesleyan School's Into the Woods each took home one.

Six students also received special Shuler Scholarships at the ceremony, which took place at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

(WXIA) -- Last week, 11Alive News received a shocking video clip from a viewer. The footage showed a teenage boy being repeatedly punched in the face in a locker room at Parkview High School in Gwinnett County.

Teens of Excellence Prom Closet Program needs formalwear donations for Male and Female Teens

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The Housing Authority of Fulton County (HAFC) and the Resident Advisory Board (RAB) want donations of formal wear and accessories for the fifth annual “Teens of Excellence” Prom Closet Program.

HAFC is seeking donations of gently used and clean prom/formal dresses and tuxedoes of all sizes for high school seniors graduating in May 2014. Donations of larger size formal wear are especially needed.

The program seeks to help single parents, grandparents and/or guardians on fixed incomes to provide prom wear without the disappointing choice of saying no to a teen about purchasing formalwear because of limited income.

The formal wear is provided to high school seniors, with priority given to Housing Authority of Fulton County residents. In 2013, more than 250 high school seniors in Fulton County received donated formal clothing to wear to their proms.

(WXIA) -- The U.S. Department of Education recently released its "Year Three" Report for the 12 states participating in the Race to the Top grant initiative.

Educational practices and successes in Georgia were highlighted throughout the report.

"We have taken on some major initiatives and our success is a direct reflection of the collaborative efforts between our department, other education agencies and the hundreds of participating teachers, principals and district leaders around our state," Dr. Susan Andrews, Deputy Superintendent of Race to the Top Implementation in Georgia, said in a release.

"While educational reform work is never easy, we are pleased with the significant progress that our state has made as reflected in this report," Andrews added.

Some highlights from the report include:

* Nearly 300 Georgia teachers were placed in state public schools from alternative certification programs.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.
