Griddle Gallop to benefit Christian City

UNION CITY, Ga. -- There is now an active (and tasty) way to help the children of Christian City.

This year's Christian City Pancake Breakfast will also feature a Griddle Gallop 5K & 1-Mile Walk.

The beautiful race course winds around the 500-acre Christian City campus. The run will be held on Saturday, Oct. 27 and includes a full pancake breakfast.

Entry fees are $20 until Sept. 24, $25 until Oct. 24 and $30 on race day. Register for the Griddle Gallop.

Fulton Fresh celebrates end of 2012 season

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension will celebrate the end of the second season of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market on Wednesday, September 12th at the Shrine of the Black Madonna located at 946 Ralph David Abernathy Blvd., SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 from 10:00 am – 11:30 am.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension, in an effort to address health disparities, began the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Program in 2011.  Fulton County residents living in “food deserts." areas with limited access to mainstream grocery stores, are able to get fresh vegetables and nutrition education from the Fulton Fresh mobile units.

In response to public demand, the program added an additional mobile unit to reach more communities.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market trucks delivered an estimated 8 tons of fresh produce to more than 1,800 residents living in 12 areas identified as food deserts.   In 2011, Fulton Fresh provided

ATLANTA -- Georgia students in grades 5-12 are encouraged to apply for the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

The awards program began searching for its next batch of honorees this week. Recipients of the award are young people who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service.

"We have been recognizing youth volunteers since 1995 and still, every year, we're amazed by the stories of exemplary community service," Prudential chairman and CEO John Strangfeld said in a statement. "We look forward to honoring the top youth volunteers of 2013 for their selflessness, their initiative and their dedication to changing communities for the better."

Christian City welcome center named for caring couple

UNION CITY, Ga. -- The welcome center at Christian City has been named the Dr. Byron and Rose Marie Harper Welcome Center after a prominent Fayette County couple.

At a recent dedication ceremony, Christian City staff also unveiled a fountain built in honor of the Harpers, who were instrumental in founding the center for abused and abandoned children.

Dr. Harper passed away several years ago, but his widow Rose Marie was on hand to witness the center's dedication ceremony. Rose Marie Harper is still an active member of Christian City's Board of Trustees.

ATLANTA -- On Wednesday, June 13, 2012, Fulton County Cooperative Extension kicked off its second season and rolled out two mobile units to expand the service areas of the Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program.

The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market 2012 Season will run from June 13 until September 12.

The addition of a second mobile unit allows Cooperative Extension to assist more residents with making healthier choices to live healthier lives.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program is provided at no cost to residents.  The program provides fresh produce and nutrition education to residents living in communities identified as “food deserts,” which are large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.
