Mother calls for resignation of Union City Police Chief

UNION CITY, Ga -- The mother of a Union City teenager, killed by a police officer in 2011, demanded that the City's Chief of Police be fired, among other demands. New evidence and testimony has prompted the Fulton County District Attorney and the GBI to re-open her son's case.

Freda Waiters has been fighting for her son for three-and-a-half years, and released a lot of her built-up frustration in front of the Union City Council. She demanding a Federal investigation and the arrest of every police officer who played a role in what she called "a cover-up of her sons' murder."

"I want the resignation of your chief of police," Waiters told officials. Her demands were not simple, but forceful. "And the way his murder was covered, like he was just an animal on the street, that's not acceptable."

Ariston Waiters' mother demands firing of Union City police chief

UNION CITY, Ga. -- The mother of a man fatally shot by police is demanding that Union City's police chief be let go.

Now that the investigation into the death of her son, Ariston, has been reopened, Freida Waiters says it's time for someone in the police department to be held accountable.

The autopsy shows Ariston Waiters was shot twice in the back, but Officer Luther Lewis has always maintained it was self defense.

The Fulton County District Attorney and US Department of Justice investigated, but Lewis was never indicted.

8 hurt in two-vehicle wreck in S. Fulton Co.

FULTON COUNTY, GA (WXIA) – Eight people were hurt in a two-vehicle wreck on Campbellton-Fairburn Road (Georgia 92) at Jones Road in south Fulton County early Tuesday afternoon.

Police said it happened at 1:12 when a vehicle driven by a 19-year-old pulled in front of a second vehicle on GA 92 carrying two adults and three children. Two others were riding in the 19-year-old's vehicle.

Corporal Kay Lester with the Fulton County Police Department says investigators believe the vehicle driven by the 19-year-old hit the other vehicle, resulting in the accident.

All of the passengers were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Charges, according to Lester, are pending. Names of those involved in the wreck were not immediately available.

UNION CITY, Ga. -- The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has reopened the case of a 2011 police shooting that killed 19-year-old Ariston Waiters.

Waiters was shot after a struggle with a Union City police officer.

Officer Luther Lewis said Waiters reached for his gun. That's when Lewis said he shot the 19-year-old twice in the back.

The officer claims self defense, but the GBI says it has talked to several officers who dispute that account.

A source has confirmed to 11Alive that the family also sent a letter to the FBI, asking that they also re-investigate the case.

The U.S. Department of Justice investigated the case back when it happened, but declined to bring charges.
